CostPrism's mission is to provide accurate, unbiased cost estimates that help consumers make informed decisions before hiring contractors, choosing medical providers, or purchasing insurance. Every piece of content we publish is held to the standards described on this page.

Data Sources & Research Standards

All cost data on CostPrism is derived from authoritative primary sources. We do not fabricate or extrapolate data without disclosure. Our primary data sources include:

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) for regional labor cost data
  • National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) — Construction cost surveys and material price indices
  • RSMeans Construction Cost Data — Per-square-foot installation costs by material and region
  • National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) — Roofing material rates, labor guidelines
  • National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) — State insurance market data, rate filings
  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — Geographic Practice Cost Indices, procedure cost data
  • FAIR Health — Medical claims data for out-of-pocket cost benchmarks
  • IRS Statistics of Income — Self-employment tax and business cost data
  • U.S. Census Bureau — Regional price parities, housing cost data

Where primary data is unavailable, we conduct analysis of secondary sources including industry associations, peer-reviewed research, and market surveys. All secondary sources are disclosed on individual pages.

Expert Review Process

Calculator methodologies, cost tables, and factual claims on medical and technical pages are reviewed by subject-matter experts before publication and upon each major update. Our review panel includes:

  • Licensed contractors and trade professionals for home improvement content
  • Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) for business and tax-related calculators
  • Healthcare economics specialists for medical cost content
  • Licensed insurance professionals for insurance cost data

Reviewer names and credentials are displayed on each applicable page. Reviewers do not have editorial control over affiliate recommendations and are compensated independently of page performance metrics.

Update Schedule

  • Insurance cost data — Semi-annually (January and July), aligned with major state filing cycles
  • Medical cost data — Annually or when CMS Geographic Practice Cost Indices are updated
  • Home improvement data — Annually (January), with mid-year reviews if material prices shift >10%
  • Business cost data — Annually, aligned with IRS and BLS annual releases

All pages display a "Last updated" date in the trust strip. If you notice data that appears outdated, contact us at our contact page.

Affiliate Relationships & Advertiser Independence

CostPrism earns revenue through affiliate referrals (contractor lead generation, insurance comparison, and software affiliate programs) and Google AdSense display advertising. These relationships do not influence our cost data, calculator formulas, or editorial content.

Affiliate links are marked with "Sponsored" or appear in clearly labeled CTA sections. Our cost estimates are calculated independently of any affiliate relationship. We partner with affiliates only after confirming they offer competitive products — we do not accept payment for editorial placement in cost tables or calculator results.

Per FTC guidelines, we disclose all material affiliate relationships. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase or submit a lead form, CostPrism may receive compensation.

Accuracy & Corrections Policy

We strive for accuracy in all cost estimates. Because construction, insurance, and medical costs vary significantly by location, provider, and project specifics, our estimates represent the middle 70–80% of real-world quotes and should not be treated as guaranteed prices.

If you identify a factual error in our data or methodology, please report it via our contact form. We investigate all reported errors and publish corrections within 5 business days of confirmation. Significant corrections are noted on the affected page.

AI-Assisted Content

Some CostPrism content is drafted with AI assistance and then reviewed, fact-checked, and edited by human experts before publication. AI-generated content is never published without human review. Our commitment to data accuracy and expert review applies equally to all content regardless of how it was initially drafted.
